Each September, Rotary highlights Basic Education and Literacy, one of Rotary International’s seven areas of focus. Literacy creates opportunity—helping people learn, work, support their families, and strengthen their communities.

Why Literacy Matters

Strong reading and writing skills help reduce poverty, improve health outcomes, encourage economic development, and promote peace.

Rotary in Action

Rotary clubs can make a meaningful impact through adult literacy programs, tutoring, teacher support, book and supply drives, library projects, mentoring, and partnerships with schools and community organizations.

How Clubs Can Get Involved

This month, clubs are encouraged to highlight current projects, launch a new literacy effort, or invite partners to serve alongside them.

• Donate books, supplies, or funds
• Volunteer as a reader, tutor, mentor, or classroom helper
• Partner with schools, libraries, nonprofits, and Rotary Action Groups
• Share your club’s literacy impact with the District
